The seventh chapter, 'Jnana Vijnana Yoga', reveals the deep mystery of God's nature. Krishna describes His two natures — the lower (the eightfold material nature) and the higher (the conscious life-principle) — and declares that the whole universe is strung on Him like beads on a thread. He identifies Himself as the essence in everything: the taste in water, the light of the sun and moon, the Om in the Vedas. He then explains the threefold maya of the gunas and the way to cross it — taking refuge in Him alone. Among the four kinds of devotees — the distressed, the seeker, the wealth-seeker and the wise — the wise one, who realizes that 'Vasudeva is all', is praised as the highest.
गीता का सातवाँ अध्याय 'ज्ञानविज्ञानयोग' भगवान के स्वरूप का गहन रहस्य खोलता है। श्रीकृष्ण अपनी दो प्रकृतियाँ बताते हैं — अपरा (आठ तत्त्वों वाली जड़ प्रकृति) और परा (चेतन/जीवरूपा); और कहते हैं कि सम्पूर्ण जगत मुझमें धागे की मणियों की तरह गुँथा है। वे जल का रस, सूर्य-चन्द्र का प्रकाश, वेदों का ॐ — हर सार-तत्त्व को अपना स्वरूप बताते हैं। फिर त्रिगुणमयी माया और उसे पार करने का उपाय (केवल भगवान की शरण) समझाते हैं। चार प्रकार के भक्तों — आर्त, जिज्ञासु, अर्थार्थी और ज्ञानी — में ज्ञानी को सर्वश्रेष्ठ बताया गया है, जो 'सब कुछ वासुदेव है' जानकर भजता है।

The Blessed Lord said: Hear, O Partha, how, with mind absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me and practising yoga, you shall know Me fully and without doubt.
श्री भगवान बोले: हे पार्थ! मुझमें अनन्य प्रेम से मन लगाकर और मेरे ही आश्रय में योग का अभ्यास करते हुए तू मुझे सम्पूर्णता से, बिना किसी संशय के कैसे जान सकेगा — वह सुन।
I shall teach you this knowledge together with its realization, in full; knowing which, nothing more remains to be known in this world.
मैं तुझे यह ज्ञान विज्ञान सहित पूरी तरह बताऊँगा, जिसे जान लेने पर संसार में फिर कुछ भी जानना शेष नहीं रहता।
Among thousands of people, scarcely one strives for perfection; and among those who strive and succeed, scarcely one truly knows Me.
हजारों मनुष्यों में कोई एक सिद्धि के लिए यत्न करता है, और यत्न करने वाले सिद्धों में भी कोई एक ही मुझे तत्त्व से जान पाता है।
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect and ego — this is My eightfold lower (material) nature. Beyond it, O mighty-armed, know My higher nature, the life-element by which this world is sustained.
पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, आकाश, मन, बुद्धि और अहंकार — ये आठ भेद वाली मेरी अपरा (जड़) प्रकृति है। हे महाबाहो! इससे परे मेरी दूसरी परा (चेतन/जीवरूपा) प्रकृति को जान, जिससे यह सारा जगत धारण किया जाता है।
Know that all beings have these two as their source; I am the origin and the dissolution of the whole universe. Nothing higher than Me exists, O Dhananjaya; all this is strung on Me like beads on a thread.
समझ ले कि सब प्राणी इन्हीं दोनों प्रकृतियों से उत्पन्न होते हैं; मैं ही समस्त जगत का उद्भव और प्रलय हूँ। हे धनंजय! मुझसे बढ़कर दूसरा कोई कारण नहीं; यह सब मुझमें वैसे ही गुँथा है जैसे धागे में मणियाँ।
I am the taste in water, O son of Kunti, the light in the moon and sun, the sacred Om in all the Vedas, the sound in ether and the manliness in men; I am the pure fragrance of the earth, the brilliance in fire, the life in all beings and the austerity in ascetics.
हे कौन्तेय! मैं जल में रस हूँ, चन्द्र-सूर्य में प्रकाश हूँ, सब वेदों में ॐकार हूँ, आकाश में शब्द और पुरुषों में पुरुषत्व हूँ; पृथ्वी में पवित्र गन्ध, अग्नि में तेज, सब प्राणियों में जीवन और तपस्वियों में तप मैं ही हूँ।
Know Me, O Partha, as the eternal seed of all beings; I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendour of the splendid.
हे पार्थ! सब प्राणियों का सनातन बीज (कारण) मुझे ही जान; मैं बुद्धिमानों की बुद्धि और तेजस्वियों का तेज हूँ।
I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment, O best of the Bharatas; and I am desire in beings that is not contrary to dharma.
हे भरतश्रेष्ठ! मैं बलवानों का वह बल हूँ जो आसक्ति और कामना से रहित है, तथा सब प्राणियों में धर्म के अनुकूल काम (इच्छा) मैं ही हूँ।
Whatever states there are — of sattva, rajas or tamas — know them all to spring from Me; yet I am not in them, they are in Me.
सत्त्व, रज और तम से उत्पन्न जो भी भाव हैं, वे सब मुझसे ही होते हैं — ऐसा जान; पर वास्तव में मैं उनमें नहीं हूँ, वे मुझमें हैं।
Deluded by these three states born of the gunas, the whole world fails to recognize Me, who am beyond them and imperishable.
इन तीनों गुणों के कार्यरूप भावों से मोहित होकर सारा संसार इन गुणों से परे मुझ अविनाशी को नहीं पहचान पाता।
This divine maya of Mine, made of the three gunas, is hard to cross; but those who take refuge in Me alone cross beyond it.
मेरी यह त्रिगुणमयी दैवी माया दुस्तर है; परन्तु जो केवल मेरी ही शरण लेते हैं, वे इस माया को पार कर जाते हैं।
The deluded evildoers, lowest of men, whose knowledge is robbed by maya and who are of demonic nature, do not take refuge in Me.
माया से जिनका ज्ञान हर लिया गया है, ऐसे आसुरी स्वभाव वाले, नीच और दुष्कर्मी मूढ़ लोग मेरी शरण नहीं लेते।
Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna — the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.
हे भरतश्रेष्ठ अर्जुन! उत्तम कर्म करने वाले चार प्रकार के भक्त मुझे भजते हैं — आर्त (दुखी), जिज्ञासु, अर्थार्थी (धन चाहने वाला) और ज्ञानी।
Of these, the wise one — ever steadfast and devoted to Me alone — excels; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me.
इनमें नित्य मुझमें स्थित, अनन्य भक्ति वाला ज्ञानी श्रेष्ठ है; क्योंकि ज्ञानी को मैं अत्यन्त प्रिय हूँ और वह मुझे अत्यन्त प्रिय है।
All these are noble, but the wise one I regard as My very self; for, steadfast in mind, he is established in Me alone as the supreme goal.
ये सभी उदार (श्रेष्ठ) हैं, पर ज्ञानी तो मेरा स्वरूप ही है — ऐसा मेरा मत है; क्योंकि वह मुझमें ही भलीभाँति स्थित है और मुझे ही परम गति मानता है।
At the end of many births, the wise one takes refuge in Me, realizing 'Vasudeva is all'; such a great soul is very rare.
अनेक जन्मों के अन्त में ज्ञानवान पुरुष 'सब कुछ वासुदेव ही है' — ऐसा जानकर मुझे भजता है; ऐसा महात्मा अत्यन्त दुर्लभ है।
Those whose knowledge is stolen by various desires resort to other gods, following this or that rite, impelled by their own nature.
भिन्न-भिन्न कामनाओं से जिनका ज्ञान हर लिया गया है, वे अपने स्वभाव से प्रेरित होकर नियम-विधान धारण कर अन्य देवताओं को भजते हैं।
Whatever form a devotee wishes to worship with faith, I make that very faith of his firm and unwavering.
जो भक्त जिस देवता के स्वरूप को श्रद्धा से पूजना चाहता है, उसकी उस श्रद्धा को मैं उसी देवता के प्रति दृढ़ कर देता हूँ।
Endowed with that faith, he worships that deity and obtains his desires — which are, in truth, granted by Me alone.
वह उस श्रद्धा से युक्त होकर उस देवता की आराधना करता है और उससे अपनी इच्छित कामनाएँ पाता है — जो वास्तव में मेरे ही द्वारा विधान की हुई हैं।
But the fruit gained by these of small understanding is perishable; worshippers of the gods go to the gods, while My devotees come to Me.
पर अल्पबुद्धि वालों का वह फल नाशवान है; देवताओं को पूजने वाले देवताओं को पाते हैं, और मेरे भक्त अन्ततः मुझे ही प्राप्त होते हैं।
The unintelligent think of Me, the unmanifest, as having taken on manifestation, not knowing My higher, imperishable and supreme nature.
बुद्धिहीन लोग मेरे परम अविनाशी, सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्वरूप को न जानते हुए, मुझ अव्यक्त को व्यक्त (साधारण मनुष्य) रूप में आया हुआ मान बैठते हैं।
Veiled by My yoga-maya, I am not manifest to all; this deluded world does not recognize Me, the unborn and imperishable.
अपनी योगमाया से ढका हुआ मैं सबके सामने प्रकट नहीं होता; इसलिए यह अज्ञानी संसार मुझ अजन्मा अविनाशी को नहीं पहचानता।
I know the beings of the past, the present and the future, O Arjuna; but no one knows Me.
हे अर्जुन! भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्य के सब प्राणियों को मैं जानता हूँ, पर श्रद्धा-भक्ति से रहित मुझको कोई नहीं जानता।
By the delusion of the pairs of opposites, arising from desire and aversion, O Bharata, all beings fall into delusion at birth.
हे भरतवंशी परंतप! इच्छा और द्वेष से उत्पन्न द्वन्द्व-मोह के कारण सब प्राणी संसार में जन्म लेते ही मोहित हो जाते हैं।
But those of virtuous deeds, whose sins have ended, freed from the delusion of opposites, worship Me with firm resolve.
किन्तु निष्काम भाव से श्रेष्ठ कर्म करने वाले जिन पुण्यात्माओं के पाप समाप्त हो गये हैं, वे द्वन्द्व-मोह से मुक्त होकर दृढ़ निश्चय से मुझे भजते हैं।
Those who strive for release from old age and death, taking refuge in Me, know that Brahman in full, the whole of the Self, and all action.
जो मेरी शरण लेकर जरा और मृत्यु से छूटने का यत्न करते हैं, वे उस ब्रह्म को, सम्पूर्ण अध्यात्म को और सम्पूर्ण कर्म को जान लेते हैं।
Those who know Me together with the adhibhuta, the adhidaiva and the adhiyajna — with steadfast mind, they know Me even at the hour of death.
जो पुरुष अधिभूत, अधिदैव और अधियज्ञ सहित मुझे जानते हैं, वे युक्तचित्त पुरुष अन्तकाल में भी मुझे जानते हैं (मुझे ही प्राप्त होते हैं)।
