Lord Krishna is the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and one of the supreme deities of Sanatan Dharma. He was born in the Dwapar Yuga in a prison cell in Mathura to father Vasudev and mother Devaki. Later, he was raised in Gokul by Nand Baba and Mother Yashoda.

Krishna's life is an unparalleled tapestry of divine play (leelas) — childhood pranks in Gokul, the Raas with Radha and the gopis in Vrindavan, the slaying of Kamsa in Mathura, ruling the kingdom of Dwarka, and the divine discourse of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita at Kurukshetra. He became Arjuna's charioteer in the Mahabharata war to re-establish dharma.

Krishna is called "Purna Purushottama" — the complete divine being possessing all 16 kalas (divine qualities). He is the ideal of all four paths — Jnana (knowledge), Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action), and Prema (love). His flute's melody, peacock-feather crown, and yellow garments live forever in the heart of every devotee.

Mantras

Chanting Lord Krishna's mantras is considered extremely auspicious and fruitful. These mantras bring peace to the mind, love to the heart, and liberation to the soul.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण, कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे । हरे राम हरे राम, राम राम हरे हरे ॥

Special Significance

Krishna's life is a cosmic play (leela), with every moment carrying a divine message of devotion, knowledge, and love. He proved through his life that God is accessible to all devotees — whether a humble cowherd, a poor friend like Sudama, or a mighty warrior like Arjuna.

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita — the divine discourse Krishna delivered to Arjuna before the Kurukshetra war — remains humanity's supreme guidebook. It contains a wonderful synthesis of Karma Yoga (path of action), Bhakti Yoga (path of devotion), and Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge).

The greatest secret of Krishna-bhakti is "surrender". The devotee who surrenders to Krishna selflessly is accepted by Krishna himself — this is his promise: "Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja" (Abandon all dharmas and surrender unto Me alone).

The Major Stories of Lord Krishna

The stories of Lord Krishna are countless — here is a brief account of some of the major leelas —

1
Divine Birth
In the Dwapar Yuga, on the midnight of Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami, Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura. Father Vasudev and Mother Devaki. King Kamsa, hearing a prophecy, had killed Devaki's first seven children. At the moment of Krishna's birth, all the guards fell asleep, the chains broke open, and Vasudev carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna to Gokul, to the home of Nand Baba.
2
Childhood Pranks — Stealing Butter
As Nand and Yashoda's beloved child in Gokul, Krishna's childhood leelas are unique. Stealing butter, breaking earthen pots, teasing the gopis — every prank held divinity. Once, Mother Yashoda saw the entire universe within Krishna's mouth.
3
Subduing the Kaliya Serpent
The serpent Kaliya had terrorized the Yamuna River, poisoning its waters. The child Krishna leaped onto Kaliya's thousand heads and danced upon them, forcing the serpent to leave the Yamuna. At the plea of Kaliya's wives, Krishna spared his life.
4
Lifting Mount Govardhan
To protect Gokul from Indra's wrath, Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on his little finger for seven days. All of Braj sheltered safely beneath the mountain. From then on, Krishna came to be known as "Girdhar" (the one who lifts the mountain).
5
Radha and the Raas Leela
Krishna's divine love with Radha Rani in Vrindavan and the Maharaas on the night of Sharad Purnima symbolize the union of the soul with the supreme. Each gopi believed Krishna was with her — but the original main Krishna was only with Radha.
6
Slaying of Kamsa and Mathura
Krishna travelled to Mathura, slew the tyrant Kamsa, and freed his parents Vasudev-Devaki from prison. He restored Ugrasen as king of Mathura.
7
Kingdom of Dwarka
To protect his people from the continuous attacks of Jarasandha, Krishna established a new kingdom in Dwarka (Gujarat) from Mathura. There he married Rukmini. He ruled righteously with his eight chief consorts and 16,108 queens.
8
Mahabharata and the Gita Teaching
In the Mahabharata war, Krishna served as Arjuna's charioteer. When Arjuna, seeing his own kin on the battlefield, dropped his weapons in delusion, Krishna delivered the divine discourse of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita — which remains a guide for all humanity. He also revealed his cosmic Vishvarupa (universal form).
