The Tirupati Balaji Temple, also known as the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, stands at an altitude of about 853 metres on the sacred hills of Tirumala in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara — a form of Lord Vishnu — also worshipped as Balaji, Srinivasa and Govinda. It is one of the most visited and richest temples in the world.

History & Mythology
According to mythology, to protect mankind from the ills of the Kali Yuga, Lord Vishnu took residence on the Tirumala hills in the form of Venkateswara. A popular legend tells that when Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu descended to earth and appeared here as Srinivasa, and later married Princess Padmavati.
It is believed that for this marriage, Lord Venkateswara took a loan from Kubera, the god of wealth — and to help repay it, devotees offer donations in the hundi to this day. This is one reason the temple is counted among the richest in the world.
Historically, the temple received the patronage of the Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara empires. The Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya made generous donations and enhanced its grandeur. Today it is administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
Temple Architecture
The Tirupati Balaji Temple is a fine example of Dravidian (South Indian) temple architecture. Its most distinctive feature is the gilded vimana over the main sanctum, known as "Ananda Nilayam", which is covered in a layer of gold.
The temple complex features grand gopurams, pillared mandapams and exquisite sculptural artistry. The sanctum houses the principal idol (Moolavar) of Lord Venkateswara, before whom devotees feel blessed to have darshan.
